Solomon Islands Rugby Football Union are continuing to have great success with their Get Into Rugby (GIR) programme, as they concluded their National Secondary School Games Rugby 7s tournament last month.

Twenty-one schools from Honiara, Noro, Malaita, Bellona and Rennell participated in the four-day tournament at Town Ground Stadium in Honiara, with Koloale High School taking championship honours.

All participating schools have completed the GIR programme which is part of World Rugby’s strategy to grow the Game globally by encouraging players of all ages to Try, Play and Stay in Rugby.

Solomon Islands Rugby Football Union CEO Alivereti Mocelutu said the GIR programme is helping rugby grow in the region and they are beginning to see the results in all areas of the game.

“The GIR programme had a massive impact nearly all the schools that participated came through the GIR activity,” said Mr Mocelutu.

“In addition, teachers and coaches went through GIR integrated training in coaching and match officiating.

“At Solomon Islands Rugby we can see the outcome of the GIR programme transitioning to another level of competition.”

The tournament was also part of Solomon Islands RFU’s Talent Identification Program, which is currently scouting potential players for the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara.

The National Secondary School Games is the Government Initiative through the National Sports Council in partnership with National Federations, with rugby sevens the most popular sport among participants and spectators.
